Slide on In

I’ll take it as a good sign.

That within the first thirty minutes of meeting my in-laws-to-be, we are all hooting and smiling as we zip down waterslides at the hotel pool.

Jeb, of course, was in the lead.

They had to be jet-lagged from their 30 hour journey. One suitcase still missing. First time in the tropics. Meeting Jeb and I for the first time. No shared language between us.

But there was no hesitation, even though the sun was setting and we all had goosebumps on our skin. Two, three, four times down the bright, blue, hotel water chute. Big splashes and smiles.

Words can meet the wet air but have nowhere to land. I don’t speak Czech, they don’t speak English.

No, the mind cannot buffer this sharing. We can only just slide on in. Dip down up to our necks in shallow water, droplets falling from our hair on grinning teeth. Shiver just a little under sunset clouds.

Their willingness warming my heart.

Soak It Up

In the tortoise shell-like dome, we lay low to the earth and sweat our prayers.

Steam rises from the rocks that hiss and sing. High pitched, sizzles respond to humble requests.

Outside this sweat lodge, trees eavesdrop in leaves that droop in dusty film.

Please may it rain.

May the earth be able to soak up the showers with full absorbency.

May the Bohemian’s parents have a smooth and easy passage in their journey from Czech to here.

Thank you.

Next day, Baggage Claim. The Bohemian stands with his mother and father, draping them in plumeria leis in the open-air terminal.

Clouds crack and a deluge fully falls.

Their eyes grow big, concerned.

The Bohemian assures them. “Don’t worry. It will do that for ten minutes and then just pass.”

Hawaiians say rains mean a blessing.

We are showered in answered prayers.

In the swirl of the pre-wedding current, I remind myself to soak it up.

Let each precious drop – these fleeting moments – permeate with full absorbency.

Growing

The Bohemian plants lettuce to join the kale we both put in the ground a month ago.  All greens will go to feed the friends and celebrating love and union with us on our wedding day.

Plants are being raised in rich soil boosted with spirulina.  Growing and thriving, they’ll be ready for harvest 11/29.
