The Beauty of Sealed Lips

Yesterday was dentistry.

And though the procedure was essentially painless, by the end, nearly my entire lower jaw was numb. I stepped out of the office with my lower lip as an amorphous, limp jellyfish, merely draped over my teeth. It wasn’t so bad that I was drooling on myself (though I may not have known if I was), my mouth was just simply out of my control and utterly foreign.

“You look fine! You can’t tell at all!” were the words of the friendly receptionist, floating behind me as I exited the building.

It wasn’t my vanity I was contending with, as much as just the odd sensation of a different kind of face. Words passed through my lips awkwardly. My smile was unfamiliar and strained. Sipping water from a glass posed a challenge.

With all of this abnormality, there seemed only one reprieve: silence. The sweet haven of simply recoiling. If I couldn’t control it, then it seemed best to still it.

So I kept my mouth softly closed and watched the world with my eyes. I relaxed my tingling jaw and gave it no job. I listened.

In doing so, I realized how much energy it takes to yak. You know, babble on. Prattle. Chatter, blather, gab. Chew the fat. Verbalize.

This morning my lips are back to normal, but they’re still remembering their speaking hiatus. They don’t want to add anything to this pre-sunrise quiet, where only the distant roosters make proclamations, knowing nothing of novocaine.

It’s not that I’m holding my tongue. I’m just letting it relax.

Top of the World

2013-09-23_awa_view_top

We needed to shift our world view.

The timing seemed auspicious. A full, “Harvest” moon. International Day of Peace. Autumnal Equinox.

Juice was in the air and the Bohemian and I were going to go immerse ourselves in it. Cloud juice that is, in the highest altitude on our island.

We walked through forest realms, looking closely at its infinite world of minutiae. We took our time, nibbling on purple lilikoi along the way.

Then, at the end, as we wove through a path of grass waving tall above our heads, the stalks parted like curtains to a stage. We stepped out, suddenly to find ourselves standing at the edge of everything.

Dragonfruiting

It was one full moon ago that the dragon began stirring. Dragonfruit, that is. Which, in its cactus-ey, spinal column-like adherence to our outdoor shower wall, it began to morph, bud, and bloom.

Seems this “Queen of the Night” responds well to full moonlight, as we watched hard succulent skin, unfold in the darkness to reveal the softest petals and hair-fine stamen. The fragrance was subtle and sweet. The pollinators loved it. And we needed the bees to buzz. Their assistance would ensure fruiting. Something that we were told would, quite possibly, not be accomplished.

“I’ve seen blooms on my dragonfruit multiple times, but never got fruit from it.”

When our impressive flowers withered, we wondered.

One month later, the full Harvest moon. Just as quickly as last month’s flowers emerged, this cycle offers blushing shades of pink spreading across folds of fruit-in-the-making.

It looks like the bees were successful!

This soon-to-come harvest in process, bodes well on our days. The Bohemian has been staking out spots for planting over 300 new trees. Holes get dug, while our eyes can only scan the field, imagining. What takes root now, later fruits for future.

Me, I’m readying to share a book with the world, fulfilling a vision I’ve held since I was seven years old and pressing fingertips on the keys of a manual typewriter.

On this full moon, as we near the autumnal equinox, here’s to a fruitful harvest for all!

For those just tuning in, here’s the dragonfruiting process revisited:
